FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Question: What holds the sand together?
Answer: Only sand and water.
Question: How long does it take you?
Answer: This is totally dependant on the size of the sculpture. In competitions we are limited to a specific timeframe's. Typically, a 20 ton sandsculpture takes a full day for two people to pound up and depending on the detail one to two days to sculpt.
Question: How long will a sandsculpture last?
Answer: Indoors a sandsculpture can last almost indefinitely. We have had sculptures last 5 months indoors with very little touch ups. Outdoors it totally depends on the weather. Some sculptures in protected areas last over a month out doors. Mainly, sandsculputures are destroyed by people long before weather or other natural causes.
Question: Does rain hurt the sculpture?
Answer: Because the sand is held together by the moisture of water rain really does not effect a sandsculpture. Heavy rain will deteriorate detail but, most of the time this can be fixed. Some sculptors would say that carving on a drizzly day is the best.
Question: Why are you guys referred to as "Pirates of the Sand".
Answer: Because we are Pirates!! One of our favorite things to create with sand is pirate sculptures. We appear at several Pirate Festivals thought the year, it's our specialty!
Question: Do you use glue?
Answer: Sometimes we use glue as a final sealer. The glue is a mixture of elmer's glue and water (elmer's is bi0-degratable). The only thing this does is create an egg shell like coating on the surface to lock in the moisture. If you use too much glue it can destroy a sculpture as the extra weight can cause collapses because the glue is heavier than water.
MOST UNIQUE QUESTIONS:
Question: Do you have a permit to build that?
Answer: We were seriously asked this question....to our knowledge, you do not need a permit to build a sandsculpture.....pretty much anywhere.
